Everis Anson Hayes was born in Waterloo, Wisconsin, on March 10, 1855. He graduated from the law department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1879 and was admitted to the bar in the same year. After several years spent practicing law throughout Wisconsin, Hayes moved to Ironwood, Michigan, in 1886 and begin mining ore.
